Legislative Attempts

INDIANA PROGRAMS

While there are currently no laws providing educational choice on a statewide basis in Indiana, a few opportunities do exist.  These choices are limited in the number of families served, but they are good starting points to provide more programs. School Choice Indiana and its partners are working with legislative leaders to expand these current programs and establish new programs that will further empower parents. • Indianapolis Public Schools Magnet program
    • The Indianapolis Public Schools Corporation (IPS) has acknowledged traditional schools do not always meet all the needs for all students.  IPS established several magnet schools around the city.  These schools each concentrate on one particular subject to allow students to study subjects at which they excel or in which they need help.  For elementary schools, some of the subjects include performing arts, math, and science.  For high schools, subjects include humanities and visual arts, business and financial studies, and international studies.  For more information about IPS magnet schools, please visit http://www.magnet.ips.k12.in.us
  • Fort Wayne Community Schools
    • Fort Wayne Community School Corporation (FWCS) provides public school choice for its city schools.  This allows parents to send their child to a different school than which they were assigned.  Roughly six percent of FWCS’s middle school students and 4 percent of its high school students opt for this program.  FWCS also provides magnet schools.  For more information about Fort Wayne’s programs, please visit http://www.fwcs.k12.in.us/studentservices/schoolcatalog/currentcatalog.pdf.
  • Charter Schools
    • Charter schools provide one alternative to private and public schools.  A charter school is a school operating on public funds without all the red tape of public schools.  Charter schools typically operate at a much lower cost than do public schools. For a complete listing of Indiana charter schools, please visit http://www.doe.state.in.us/htmls/charter_schools.html.
  • Scholarship Organizations
    • A scholarship organization collects private donations from individuals and businesses.  These donations are given as scholarships for low income children so they can attend private schools.  Two such organizations are Educational CHOICE Charitable Trust and Starfish Initiative.  For more information about these organizations, visit www.choicetrust.org or www.starfishintitiative.org.
